This approval is the first time ANVISA, Brazil\u2019s health authority, has granted a special import authorization for RSHO\u2122 as part of treatment for an autism patient in the country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;We commend the Brazilian government for its compassionate approach to cannabis and for recognizing the need for alternative treatments to treat medical conditions for which there are currently no cure,&#8221; said Dr. Stuart Titus, CEO of Medical Marijuana, Inc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Patients in Brazil with a doctor\u2019s prescription can petition ANVISA for permission to import RSHO\u2122 for any condition. ASD develops in infancy or childhood and is characterized by social interaction difficulties, verbal and physical communication impairments, and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/autism\/data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1 in 68 children in the U.S. currently display signs of ASD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The country\u2019s rate of 27.2 cases per 10,000 children studied makes Brazil <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldatlas.com\/articles\/countries-with-the-highest-rates-of-autism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">8th<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the world for ASD incidence rate, making an effective treatment option a critical need. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Children diagnosed with ASD often face a greater degree of cognitive impairment and have difficulty with interpersonal interaction, meaning that they may require special care, like adaptations in formal education. Autism has only been recognized as a disability by the Brazilian government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25842350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">since 2012<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, when extensive lobbying by parent advocates led to a change in federal law in Brazil. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Titus went on to say, &#8220;We hope that this most recent decision by ANVISA will bring light to additional families in Brazil who have children with autism that could benefit from access to our hemp oil.
