[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Since securing <\/span>additional funding<\/span><\/a> last fall, AXIM\u00ae Biotechnologies has expanded its ongoing new drug research to include treatments for opioid addiction, irritable bowel syndrome, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis and eczema, and restless leg syndrome. <\/span><\/p>\n AXIM\u00ae Biotechnologies is now taking the necessary steps to begin clinical trials for the treatment of a new condition \u2013 psychosis.<\/p>\n The company has entered a Clinical Study Agreement (CSA) with the University of British Columbia in Canada to begin a clinical trial with its CanChew\u00ae Plus CBD chewing gum product to treat drug-induced psychosis in adult patients.<\/span><\/p>\n The functional chewing gum will be composed of 50 mg CBD and utilizes the company\u2019s patent on cannabinoid-based chewing gum. AXIM\u00ae hopes to demonstrate the efficacy of the company\u2019s new chewing gum product to treat psychosis before moving on to more advanced clinical research. The University of British Columbia will work with Health Canada and their own ethics board to design the parameters of the upcoming clinical trial. <\/span><\/p>\n According to the <\/span>National Alliance on Mental Illness<\/span><\/a>, psychosis refers to an episode in which an individual has a break from reality. This often includes but doesn\u2019t require delusions and hallucinations. <\/span><\/p>\n About <\/span>3 in every 100 people will experience at least one episode of psychosis<\/span><\/a> in their lifetimes, and these breaks are often connected to the use of legal or illegal drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n Drug-induced psychosis is when a psychotic episode is linked to the abuse of a drug. This can occur from taking too much of a certain drug, having an adverse reaction from a drug or after mixing substances, or withdrawal from a drug. Drug-related psychosis often manifests in those with underlying mental health issues, but it is not a requirement.<\/p>\n Drug-related psychosis doesn\u2019t have to be caused by illicit drugs like cocaine and methamphetamines. Common pharmaceutical medications can also cause psychosis \u2013 including popular muscle relaxants, antidepressants, antihistamines, heart medications, pain medications, seizure medications, and chemotherapy drugs. Instead, it is a symptom of something else and is typically regarded as temporary. When psychosis is linked to drug use, treatment begins with the removal of the drug from the system. This can lead to severe withdrawal symptoms. The use of prescription antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications may be employed as part of currently accepted treatments. <\/span><\/p>\n Medical Marijuana Inc. CEO Dr. Stuart Titus was quoted saying, \u201cPsychosis can last up to a few days, and is often characterized by hallucinations, delusions, memory loss and confusion. We look forward to learning how CBD may help treat this medical condition.\u201d<\/p>\n CBD has been demonstrated to possess antipsychotic properties in a number of previous studies. The cannabinoid was shown in one study to be <\/span>as effective an antipsychotic as a leading schizophrenia medication<\/span><\/a>. Another study revealed that <\/span>CBD may attenuate the negative effects of THC<\/span><\/a>, including psychological disorders. A <\/span>review of 30 years of research<\/span><\/a> on CBD and psychosis states that \u201cresults support the idea that CBD may be a future therapeutic option in psychosis\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n According to the company\u2019s <\/span>new drug pipeline<\/span><\/a>, AXIM\u00ae\u2019s CBD-based psychosis treatment should enter Phase II clinical trials next year.
